Alaa Murabit speaks about her disappointment with the transitional government and her hopes for Libya’s political future.

Congratulations to Alaa Murabit of Libya on being named a finalist for the Trust Women Hero Award! Alaa is 1 of 9 chosen from 170 nominated women from all over the world.

Alaa became well known as an activist opposed to the Qaddafi regime after she and several friends created a YouTube video supporting the revolution. Through the organization she founded, the Voice of Libyan Women, Alaa organized “One Voice: The First International Women’s Conference in Libya.” At this historic event that took place in November 2011, women presented their recommendations to 60 members of the National Transitional Government.

In February 2012, Alaa, a member of our Women Waging Peace Network, traveled to DC with Inclusive Security to meet with Reps. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Russ Carnahan (D-MO) and discuss the political transition process in Libya.
