Israel’s only female three-star general and the country’s only woman to head a security organization, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Orit Adato is founder and managing director of Adato Consulting Ltd., which specializes in coping with terror cells and organized crime, handling terrorists in prisons, and encouraging intelligence cooperation among law enforcement agencies in Latin America and Africa. Adato Consulting also advises post-conflict governments on developing correctional and security systems.
In her previous role as commissioner of the Israeli Prison Service, Gen. Adato led discussions with the Palestinian Authority and General Security Service over prisoners of the Second Intifada. She served in the Israeli Defense Forces for 24 years in command and training positions. Later heading the Women’s Corps, Gen. Adato advised the IDF on increasing women’s participation in the military and their promotion to higher ranks, and made the case for their equal treatment by the military. For the past nine years, she has served as the first international vice president of the International Correction and Prisons Association, an organization of more than 600 professionals from 75 nations; her work earned her their 2010 Outstanding Contribution Award.
Gen. Adato is a former president and board member of the International Women’s Forum in Israel and one of two female board members of the Council for Peace and Security, an influential group of former senior officials and academics that advises the government. She earned a master’s degree in political science from the National Security College at the University of Haifa.
