In 2005, anthropologist Luz Piedad Caicedo Delgado helped establish Humanas, a feminist NGO dedicated to women’s rights and gender justice that works with similar organizations throughout Chile and Ecuador. Through Humanas and in conjunction with UNIFEM, Ms. Caicedo is currently conducting research on the impact of paramilitary demobilization on women’s lives and personal security. She previously worked for the Institute of Alternative Legal Services, a non-governmental organization that promotes human rights for disadvantaged groups such as ethnic minorities, women, and internally displaced people. Ms. Caicedo later focused her research on the conditions faced by women IDPs; the results of her study were published by the Red Nacional de Mujeres (National Women’s Network). Prior to working in the NGO field in Colombia, Ms. Caicedo worked with women’s NGOs in Ecuador and spent seven years teaching communications at the university level in Colombia.
