A mediator and conflict analyst, Alice Nderitu is Senior Advisor to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Africa. Her work currently focuses on Nigeria, where she recently brokered peace agreements between 29 ethnic communities in Kaduna State and 56 ethnic communities in Southern Plateau.
Ms. Nderitu is a member of the Kenya National Committee on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity and All Forms of Discrimination, and the only female member of a group of elders mediating confidentially between African leaders at the highest levels.
Following election-related violence in Kenya in 2007 and 2008, Ms. Nderitu served as Commissioner in the National Cohesion and Integration Commission created to address the crisis and its root causes. She then founded and co-chaired the Uwiano Platform for Peace, a conflict prevention agency that uses mobile technology to encourage citizens to report indicators of violence and to help national agencies respond. The platform was largely credited with ensuring peaceful elections in Kenya in 2013.
Ms. Nderitu also served on Kenya’s National Commission on Human Rights as head of the education department. She has trained law enforcement and military officers on civil-military cooperation and the rule of law throughout Africa. She pioneered the first curriculum for training public officers on human rights in Kenya and helped set up national human rights commissions in Ethiopia, Somaliland, and South Sudan.
Ms. Nderitu publishes widely on human rights and conflict prevention, and serves on the boards of leading nonprofits in Kenya and abroad, including the Life and Peace Institute; Act, Change, Transform (ACT!); and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit.
She holds a master’s degree in armed conflict and peace studies from the University of Nairobi and was a 2011 Transitional Justice Fellow at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation. In 2012, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego named Ms. Nderitu Woman Peacemaker of the Year.
